Passport Photo Specs for Major Countries

Update (November 1, 2016): Glasses are not allowed as of 1^st November, 2016. It is okay if the photo of you in your unexpired passport has glasses, you don't have to get a new one. But next time you renew your passport, you'll have to take off your glasses.

• Image pixel dimensions must be in a square aspect ratio (meaning the height must be equal to the width). Minimum acceptable dimensions are 600 pixels (width) — 600 pixels (height). Maximum acceptable dimensions are 1200 pixels (width) — 1200 pixels (height).
• Must be in color (24 bits per pixel) in sRGB color space (common output of most digital cameras).
• File size Must be less than or equal to 240 kilobytes.
• The head height or facial region size (measured from the top of the head, including the hair, to the bottom of the chin) must be between 50% and 69% of the image's total height.
• The eye height (measured from the bottom of the image to the level of the eyes) should be between 56% and 69% of the image's height.
• Composition Checklist

• Subjects must look straight ahead with mouths shut and "neutral" expressions.
• Passport picture size needs to be- 45mm by 35mm.
• United Kingdom Passport photos must be printed on normal photographic paper.
• Applicants must be on their own in the picture and their head and shoulders must take up 65% to 75% of the frame.

• 45–50mm (1 3/4" -1 15/16" ) high and 35–40mm (1 3/8" -1 9/16" ) wide.
• show head and top of shoulders close up, so the measurement of the face from the bottom of the chin to the crown (i.e. top of head without hair) is between 32mm and 36mm (1 1/4" -1 7/16" ).

• The frame size must be at least 35 mm x 45 mm.
• The photographs must show the full front view of the head, with the face in the middle of the photograph, and include the top of the shoulders.
• The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm and 36 mm.
• Crown means the top of the head or (if obscured by hair or a head covering) where the top of the head or skull would be if it could be seen.
• If the photographs do not meet the specifications, you will have to provide new photographs before your application can be processed.

• The photographs must:
  • show a full front view of the person’s head and shoulders showing full face centered in the middle of the photograph;
  • have a plain white background;
  • measure between 25mm and 30mm (1" and 1 1/5") from chin to crown;
  • have a 35mm x 45mm (1 3/8" x 1 3/4") finished size;

• Photos must show a full front view of the person’s head showing full face centered in the middle of the photo;
• Be clear, well-defined and taken against a plain white background without shadows;
• Be produced from the same unretouched film or from the same file capturing the digital image or from two identical photos exposed simultaneously by a split-image or multi-lens camera;
• Be original photos (not taken from any existing photo);
• New: measure between 25 mm and 30 mm (1” and 1 1/5”) from chin to crown (top of hair);
• Have a 35x45 mm (1 3/8? x 1 3/4?) finished size;
• Be on photographic paper that has a backing which accepts and retains the date. Photos without this backing are not acceptable;
• Be on prints that are well-fixed and washed to prevent discoloration;
• Bear the date the photo was taken (not the date the photo was printed) directly on the back of one print (stick-on labels are not acceptable).

• Chinese Passport Photos must be 48x33mm
• Chinese Passport Photos head height is between 28mm - 33mm
• Head width is between 21mm - 24mm in Chinese Passport Photos
• A white or light blue background is required for Chinese Passport Photos
• If you decide to order your passport photos for China with us, please make sure your photo meets following requirements:
• Full UPPER HALF BODY view with all facial features clearly visible.
• Photo has no shadows (To avoid shadows, stand around 3 feet away from the wall)
• Make sure the background in your photo is uniform with white of light blue color.
• Face should neither be too bright nor too dark
• If wearing spectacles – reflection of light from the glasses should not be visible.
• No visible shadow on the face or background.
• Do not wear white/ light colored shirt as it blends with light background.

• A photograph or a similar pictorial record (hereinafter a “photograph”) has a smooth surface, must satisfy tests for image stability and be black and white or colour. It is rectangular measuring 35x45mm, standing on the shorter side with straight or rounded (radius = 3mm +/- 0.5mm,) corners and is 0.13 to 0.27mm thick.
• The photograph shows the head and upper part of the shoulders of the person facing the camera so that the central vertical plane of the face is extended to the vertical plane of the camera lens and the horizontal plane of the face formed by the eyes is extended to the horizontal plane of the camera lens.
• The photograph must correspond to the person’s appearance at the time of filing the application. Photos of you looking over your shoulder, turned to the side or with the head inclined are not acceptable. The expression must be neutral with the mouth closed and the eyes open. Hair should not cover the face.
• The minimum distance between the upper edge of the head and the upper edge of the photo is 2mm. The height of the facial part of the head, which is formed by the distance between the eyes and the chin, is at least 13mm.
• The background is white to light blue, or if needs be, a light grey color. Various hues of these colors are acceptable. The photograph should be free from reflection or glare that would markedly change the person’s characteristic identifying traits such as the shape and location of the eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin and the overall shape of the face. The photograph cannot be retouched nor can any other modifications be made to the negative or positive nor can the person’s image be digitally processed and then printed.

• The Germany Passport photo must clearly show the person's facial features from the bottom of the chin to the crown (the top of the head, not the top of the hair) as well as the left and right sides of the face.
• The face must take up 70%- 80% of the German Passport picture. This corresponds to a height of 32 - 36mm.
  Because it is often difficult to determine where the top of the head would be without hair, photos should be rejected only if the face measures less than 27mm or more than 40mm.
• In the case of voluminous hairstyles, the entire head (including hair) must be visible without reducing the size of the face, if possible.
• The face must be centered in the photo.
• The background must be one color and bright (ideally a neutral grey color) and in a contrasting color to the face and hair. In the case of light-colored hair, a medium-grey background is suitable whilst a light-grey background is suitable for dark hair. The background must not be patterned.
  The photo must show only the person to be photographed (no other persons or objects in the photo).
  Shadows on the background are not acceptable.
• GERMANY PASSPORT PHOTOS for CHILDREN
  For children aged 9 and under, the following requirements apply: The face should take up 50 ¡V 80% of the photo. This means that the face from the bottom of the chin to the crown (the top of the head, not the top of the hair) should measure between 22 and 36mm. Because it is often difficult to determine where the top of the head would be without hair, photos should be rejected only if the face measures less than 17mm or more than 40mm. See below for special requirements in the case of babies and very young children.

• Hong Kong Passport photos specify no hats allowed

• Applicants may be allowed to wear eyeglasses provided the eyes are distinctly shown
• Women are not allowed to wear a veil except in cases of Muslims and nuns
• Long hair and earring are not allowed for men. * Photos taken at the MTR or Photo-Me are not acceptable

• Italian consulate office in beautiful Los Angeles requires, 4x4cm photos, but one the detailed photo specs page, they use the same PDF that is used for Schengen Passport photos (35x45mm)
• Consulate General of Italy in Boston does not mention any specific size so probably they will take 51x51mm photos.
• Consulate General of Italy in Chicago: Based on the samples on the link above on the consulate website, they require 35x45mm sized EU/Schengen style photos. If you want to order photos for Italy for Chicago consulate, please order Schengen Passport photos on our website.
• Consulate General of Italy in Detroit: One passport photo 1.5"x1.5" (full-face, white background).

• Photos must be less than 6 months old.
• New Zealand Passport Photo size 35mm x 45mm.
• Head size in Passport Photos for New Zealand.
  head, including hair, should fit within the oval shown in the template below:
  • Maximum size of head, including hair, must be 80% of photo
  • Head must be cantered, with a clear gap around the sides and top of the head, including hair.
• Use high quality, high resolution photo paper
• You can also use color film or low gloss coated thermal papers as long as the printer is high resolution.
• DO NOT use matt paper, heavy-backed thermal paper or an ink-jet printer.
• The background must be plain and light, but not white
  • there must be strong contrast between image and background, with no shadows.

• Photos should be 3.5x4.5cm.
